New Delhi: Indian chess king Viswanathan Anand lost to Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the second game of the World Chess Championship in Sochi on Sunday.
Playing with black pieces this time, Anand couldn’t keep up to the demand of his opponent. Carlsen now has 1.5 points to Anand’s 0.5.
This is an important victory for Carlsen, who is the top-ranked chess player in the world. Leading 1-0 in the 12-match championship gives him a much needed early momentum.
Earlier, the first game on Saturday had earlier been drawn in 48 moves when Carlsen could not avoid perpetual checks.
This is revenge time for five-time world champion Anand, who had lost his crown to Carlsen in 2013.
The Indian Grandmaster had lost the title to 22-year-old Carlsen after the Norwegian defeated him 6.5-3.5 at the end of Round 10 of the 12 scheduled games.
Anand had to go through the Candidates Tournament to seal a place in Sochi. The Indian managed to come out victorious in the Candidates and became the second former champion after Anatoly Karpov to win the Candidates Tournament. The 63-year-old Russian had repeated the feat in 1987 and 1990.
This year’s clash between Carlsen and Anand sees the two opponents face each other in consecutive world championship matches for the first time since Garry Kasparov and Karpov last met in 1990.
