Winter Storm Warnings: Flight Delays At Chicago’s O’Hare Airport As US Battles Extreme Weather

Several airports across the US, including Chicago’s O’Hare Airport and Boston’s Logan Airport reported flight delays and cancelations as winter storm warnings were issued on Friday.

Airlines canceled more than 1900 flights and delayed more than 1200 as of 9:12 AM ET, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.

“We expect some operational challenges due to the weather in the Midwest today and potentially tomorrow due to the winter weather in the region,” Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) said.

CBS News reported that as of 11 AM local time on Friday, 779 flights were canceled at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, and 276 were canceled at Midway International Airport. More than 320 Chicago flights have been delayed.

“Due to an ongoing winter storm in Chicago, airlines at O’Hare have proactively canceled more than 650 flights, and they are reporting delays averaging 30 minutes. Passengers should always check the status of their flight with their air carrier before departing for the airport,” the O’Hare Airport initially tweeted.

Southwest Airlines in a travel advisory added that some of its flights in Chicago, Detroit and Omaha could be impacted. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had on Thursday warned that clouds, snow and windforce could delay flights at certain airports.

Chicago is bracing to see record-breaking snowfall, with 10.7 inches of snow having fallen there already this season. In Iowa, 4.4 inches of snow has already fallen on Friday north of Des Moines.

Areas west of Chicago and near the Wisconsin border are expected to see more than 6 to 12 inches.
