Pakistan youngster Saim Ayub ended up falling awkwardly on Day 3 while on the field during Australia’s first innings in the ongoing Sydney Test.
Steve Smith lofted one over mid-off with Ayub chasing after the ball and he made a diving attempt but ended up jamming his knee on the turf, taking quite a tumble in the process.
Luckily, Ayub escaped unhurt.
Fans have reacted to the clip, pointing out the hue and cry that followed when a similar incident happened in Dharamshala during the ODI World Cup. “When this happened in Dharamshala there was a huge criticism”, one user wrote.
“So much talk about the outfields of India during the WC. Seems to be a problem in Australia also eh?,” write another.
While another fan suggested that this incident was a rather rare occurrence in Australian cricket pitches. He said, “Rare scene in Australian grounds”.
One fan claimed that this should have been a five-run penalty for Pakistan as Ayub ended up stopping the ball with his cap. He said, “Why was this not a 5-run penalty? Ball hit his hat?”
Another fan seemed to agree as he wrote, “Ball was caught in the cap! Penalty runs given?”
Pakistan and Australia’s three-match Test series is nearing conclusion.
The Aussies have already won the series 2-0 by bagging consecutive victories in Perth and Melbourne. The first match saw David Warner lead from the front while scoring 164 runs. His knock helped Australia secure a win by 360 runs over Pakistan in Perth.
The Test match in Melbourne was a much closer affair with Pat Cummins scalping 10 wickets in the game. The Aussie skipper’s impressive haul spearheaded Australia into a second straight victory by 79 runs.
In the ongoing Test in Sydney, Pakistan recovered from a batting collapse to be 313-all out. Aamer Jamal continued his brilliant form with the ball, taking six wickets to curb Aussies at 299 runs.
And then Pakistan suffered another batting collapse finishing Day 3 at 68/7 with an overall lead of 82 runs.
