Unstoppable incidents of sacrilege blot on the face of Badal government: Channi

Charanjit-Singh-ChanniChandigarh, September 25: The Punjab Congress Legislature Party leader Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi, while expressing his deep anguish over continuing incidents of sacrilege of religious scriptures in the state, said this was a blot on the face of the government headed by Mr Parkash Singh Badal in general and that of Deputy Chief Minister Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal in particular who also happened to be the Home Minister. He appealed to the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib to immediately withdraw back “Fakhre Qaum and Panth Rattan” conferred to S Parkash Singh Badal as he has not done anything for the community. It is his rule in which maximum number of cases of Sacrilege has occurred and that too no culprit has been traced or arrested till today. Even the commission inquires set up by the Badal government were mere eyewash.

“Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal can’t escape the blame by taking refuge in the argument that it is a deep rooted conspiracy to disturb communal harmony in the state. This precisely is the reason for worry among the people at large. It is this highly sensitive issue that the police under him have failed to tackle. It is high time that he owns responsibility for the worsening situation in the state and at least apologize to the people in case he can’t muster moral courage to tender his resignation”, he said. S Sukhbir Singh Badal being the president of Shiromani Akali Dal Badal and the home minister of Punjab should take responsibility for these incidents.

Mr Channi maintained that the issue involved was not harvesting political benefits by exploiting sentiments of the people on such issues but of being concerned about the volatile situation as Punjab has passed through the long dark tunnel of 15 years during which every section of the Punjabi society suffered.

He held politicization of the police for this degeneration in this once efficient force that had restored peace in the troubled state. He said the situation in the state was turning totally chaotic with politically patronized mafias and gangs having free run. He also cited the example of the husband of Akali sarpanch thrashing a nurse in a Bagha Purana hospital as latest example of political goondaism.

He pointed out that religious scriptures of all the major faiths have been desecrated over the period beginning with Guru Granth Sahib last year.

He did not rule of some deeper and nefarious design to destabilize the state in the run up to the elections. However, the security agencies seemed to be helpless for which accountability must be fixed. He said in any democratic set up, it was always the top person who owns up and in that case, that person was none else but Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal who should have quit by now.
