Sidelining Punjabi in Delhi amounts to defrauding students of their right: Punjabi Cultural Council

Kejriwal_PTIChandigarh: The Punjabi Cultural Council has strongly denounced the decision of Delhi Government to remove teaching of Punjabi language from curriculum of 9th and 10th classes in the state schools and stated that with this autocratic decision, the Delhi government has snatched the right of students to study in their mother tongue besides posing a threat to the careers of Punjabi, Sanskrit and Urdu language teachers.

The Council president Harjeet Singh Grewal and finance secretary Baljit SIngh Saini, in a letter to the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, has called this decision as a grave injustice to the lakhs of Punjabi speaking people of Delhi and said with this decision the students would face difficulty in pursuing higher education or securing government jobs.

The Punjabi Cultural Council (PCC) also termed it a decision encroaching upon the right to study religious scriptures through mother tongue and also the one which puts regional languages on the backburner. Grewal and Saini said this unreasonable decision is a gross violation of the tri-lingual formula implemented through the country and Education Act, 1968 and 1986.

They elaborated that it was the need of the hour to promulgate strategies to further promote and enhance the stature of Punjabi language, having 2nd language status, but on the contrary AAP government of Delhi has crushed the emotions of crores of Punjabi people residing in the country as well as diaspora. The council further stated that Punjabi is the common language of both East and West Punjab and is being taught in other states of the country as well as in foreign countries, adding they said the Punjabi community would never tolerate this dictatorial decision.

They rued the fact that with this decision, the education department Delhi has shown the door to regional languages by adding professional courses in CGPA of 9th and 10th classes along with 5 compulsory subjects. With this, now no student would want to have additional burden of studying Punjabi as seventh additional subject as its marks would not be counted towards grand total.

Divulging more, Grewal said that now the study of Punjabi would only be limited to 8th class. Calling it a conspiracy to detach children from their religious and cultural heritage, the council leaders said that now the dreams of the students of government schools to pursue higher education in regional language and prepare for civil services exams would be shattered. They emphasized that developed countries have progressed only by keeping connect with their mother tongue and culture but on the other side, this arbitrary decision would result in young ones of India losing emotional chords with their mother tongue.

Grewal and Saini also clarified that the council is not opposed to including professional courses in the educational curriculum but only stresses on the fact that making students study professional courses sans mother tongue is a grave administrative blunder of the authorities. They demanded from Arvind Kejriwal that this anti-Punjabi decision should be immediately rolled back keeping in view the sentiments of scores of Punjabi’s.
