Patiala, June 2
National record holder Manpreet Kaur of Punjab broke the meet record on her way to winning the gold medal in the shot put event at the 21st Federation Cup here today.
Manpreet’s best effort of 17.04 metres broke the previous mark of 16.94m set by Harbans Kaur in Chennai in 1997. Manpreet didn’t face much challenge, finishing over two metres ahead of silver medallist Ramanpreet (14.90m) of Punjab. Bengal’s Anamika Das won the bronze medal with a throw of 14.67m.
“I was expecting to cross 18m in the competition. I was trying to match my personal best,” said Manpreet, who set the national record of 18.86m in April this year.
New national record
Uttar Pradesh’s Sarita Singh broke the national record in the hammer throw event with an effort of 65.25m, claiming the gold. Sarita bettered the previous mark of 62.74m, set by Manju Bala in 2014. Gunjan Singh (61.95m) finished second, while Nidhi Kumar (57.99m) took bronze.
Kerala’s R Anu ran her personal best to break the meet record as she won the women’s 400m hurdles event. Anu’s time of 57.39 seconds bettered the mark set by Shahebani Oram in 2002. Odisha’s Jauna Murmu (57.51s) also ran under the old record. Karnataka’s Arpitha M took bronze in 57.64s.
