New Delhi/Rohtak, August 20: Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday announced a financial award of Rs 1 crore for Olympic bronze medal-winner wrestler Sakshi Malik.

Sisodia’s announcement came while he visited Sakshi’s native place Rohtak, Haryana.

He also announced a direct promotion for Sakshi Malik’s father Sukhbir Malik who is a bus conductor with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

Earlier, the Haryana government had announced a financial award of Rs 2.5 crore and a government job for Sakshi.

The state government has promised a bumper bonus for medallists in the prestigious quadrennial event-Rs 6 crore for gold, Rs 4 crore for silver and Rs 2 crore for bronze.

Sakshi’s employers, the Indian Railways, will also honour her with a cash award of Rs 60 lakh for her bronze-winning feat.

The Railway Ministry had announced before the start of the Games that cash awards of Rs 1 cr, Rs 75 lakh and Rs 50 lakh will be given to medal winners and a further Rs 10 lakh for qualifying.

The 23-year-old Rohtak-based Sakshi clinched the bronze in the women’s freestyle 58 kg wrestling category with a spirited comeback victory over Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan.

Though she was trailing 0-5 against her Kyrgyzstan opponent, she bounced back in style to hand India its fourth bronze in wrestling in the Olympic history.

With this win, Malik becomes the fourth Indian wrestler to win a medal in Olympics after KD Jadhav, two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt.
