Rio Olympics 2016: After failing to qualify, Boxing Federation to seek wild card entry for Mary Kom

Mary-KomNew Delhi: After India’s Olympic bronze medallist boxer MC Mary Kom, also India’s face of the sport, failed to qualify for the Rio Olympics 2016, Indian boxing’s ad-hoc committee on Wednesday said that they will try to get Mary Kom a wild card entry into the upcoming quadrennial mega-event.

The five-time world champion’s hope of qualifying for the Rio Olympics was dashed when she suffered a defeat in a bout against Azize Nimani of Germany in the second round of AIBA Women’s World Championships in Astana.

A wild card entry into big international events like the Olympics applies to countries that fail to produce athletes who meet qualification standards. The wild card will allow them to enter as competitors whose proven abilities are below the standard otherwise required, says source.

Pugilist Sarita Devi also failed to qualify for the Rio Olympics.
