Race for BJP state president begins

avinsh and kamalChandigarh, The race for top state Bharatiya Janata Party post has begun following the announcement of schedule of organisational elections by the party.
Avinash Rai Khanna, chief election officer of the Bharatiya Janata Party, yesterday announced to complete the election process by November 20 in all states.
Like other parties, the BJP too is a divided house in the state. There are two main factions.
Besides incumbent Kamal Sharma, who will try for a second term, others leaders reportedly in the race are Tarun Chugh, national secretary of the BJP, and Rakesh Rathore, former Mayor of Jalandhar.
The name of Ashwani Sharma, former president of the state unit from Pathankot, is also doing the rounds. In the BJP, a president can be repeated for a second term of three years, but not beyond.
Party insiders said names Avinash Rai Khanna and Manoranjan Kalia were also doing the rounds. Khanna, who headed the party earlier, is now handling party’s bigger assignments such as conducting organisational elections across the country. Earlier, he played a crucial role for the party in the J&K Assembly elections.
Kalia, known as an effective leader, has the capability to talk on equal terms with the Shiromani Akali Dal leadership.
Navjot Singh Sidhu’s name had figured earlier for the post. But for the past some months, he is silent as far as his role in the party is concerned.
His wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu is more active now. She recently took on the Shiromani Akali Dal leadership over Amritsar’s development.
