PUNJAB TO ORGANISE ‘NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON OVERCOMING CHALLENGES IN MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN INDIAN CITIES’ ON SEPTEMBER 22

Chandigarh, September 19: Punjab taking a lead in implementing Swachh Bharat Mission is going to organize a ‘National workshop on overcoming challenges in Municipal Solid Waste Management in Indian cities’ here on September 22. Deputy Chief Minister Punjab, Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal would participate and interacting with the participants of this workshop.

Giving detail of the workshop, an official spokesman said that many challenges were being faced by all stakeholders, on the road to make India clean, safe, hygienic and livable towards achieving the goal of Swachh Bharat Mission. “With extensive participation of top functionaries of State Governments, Municipal Commissioners, National and International Companies in Solid Waste Management, technology providers, NGOs and public representatives, this workshop will be an excellent platform for knowledge gain through experience sharing and networking”, he added.

Describing ‘Punjab Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Project’ a Step towards achieving total Sanitation, spokesman said that this project of Punjab Government has set an example for nation. He said this project being implemented by Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC) has taken a significant initiative for managing the Municipal Solid Waste generated in its 165 Urban Local Bodies (all towns & cities) in a scientific manner. He said that Punjab Government has formulated a State Level MSW Management project for managing Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) of all towns and cities of Punjab on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode for 25 years.

Giving the detail of the project, Spokesman said that under this state level MSW management program, entire State of Punjab has been divided into eight MSW Clusters namely Bathinda, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Patiala, GMADA and Pathankot. “At present, the integrated MSW Project is functional in three clusters namely Bathinda, Ferozpur and Jalandhar. Door to door collection of MSW has been started in above mentioned three clusters and remaining five clusters are under development stage. The clusters under development stage, namely Ludhiana, Amritsar, Patiala, GMADA, Pathankot and Ludhiana are available for contracting”, he added.

Highlighting the importance of this workshop, spokesman said that the surge of initiative by City Governments across India, in implementing Solid Waste Management Projects, has faced many challenges in the choice of models, processes and technologies to suit the city conditions. He said where on one hand, several innovative practices have emerged, on the other; there were several areas of failure and partial success. He said that this workshop being organised by PMIDC in Collaboration with Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) Government of India would address problem areas and challenges and seek plausible solutions for urban local bodies, private service providers and public.
