Proud of DU Protesters, Says Rohith Vemula’s Brother

New Delhi: Students and teachers protesting against the RSS-linked Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) have found support thousands of kilometers away in Hyderabad.

Raja Vemula, brother of Hyderabad University research scholar Rohith Vemula, whose suicide triggered nation-wide protests in January last year, has come out in support of the protesters and even went as far as far as to say he was “proud” of the protesters for taking on the ABVP.

“I am proud of the students of Delhi University for taking on the ABVP. It takes courage for these students, many of them being as young as 18-years-old, to come out and brave violence like this. The students have shown that they will not suffer this victimisation at the hands of Manuwaadi forces who seek to saffronise our universities,” Vemula told News18.

He added, “I am honoured to be a part of the resistance against a government that is so intolerant of differing opinions. This chaos started because Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid were invited to speak at Ramjas College. I am sure that the reason the ABVP opposed them is because they have Muslim names. That is why it is so easy for them to paint them as anti-nationals. Umar, especially, is being treated like a terrorist.”

Vemula’s family is currently preparing for a legal battle against the Guntur district administration, which ruled earlier this month that Rohith Vemula was not a Dalit. His mother Radhika Vemula was also served a show-cause notice.
