Nalanda hospital floods, fish swim in ICU

Patna: Doctors, nurses and patients had to wade through knee-deep water and fish swam in the ICU of the state run Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) here on Sunday, which was flooded due to incessant rain lashing the capital city. Heavy rains in last 48 hours and water logging in streets, hospitals, and educational institutions have exposed the failures of the state government.
Now, questions are being raised on the efforts of the state government to include Patna into the list of Smart Cities in next few years.

While television channels beamed the shocking footage of fish swimming inside the ICU, the family members of patients as well as some of the hospital staffers were left fuming. One of the nurses at the ICU echoed similar opinion and alleged that along with fish, there were snakes, scorpions and leeches in the water. Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav who uploaded the picture of the hospital showed fishes swimming in the ICU.

Sources told this newspaper that hospital staff faced difficulty in providing medical support to patients and several machines were also shut down due to water. It has been raining continuously in Patna for the last 48 hours and according to Patna mayor, the situation has occurred because the hospital is located in the low lying area.
