Mumbai survive hat-trick, Pune couldn’t

Kieron Pollard

Bengaluru, Kieron Pollard scripted Mumbai Indian’s sensational four-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore with a blistering 70-run knock that overshadowed Samuel Badree’s hat-trick here today.
Chasing a 143-run target, Mumbai looked down and out with Badree’s hat-trick reducing them to 7/4 in the third over. It was the first hat-trick of IPL-10. It soon became 33/5 but the big-hitting West Indian and Krunal Pandya (37 not out) stitched a match-winning 93-run partnership to stage a dramatic turnaround.
Mumbai went into the innings break with an upper hand after restricting RCB to 142/5 despite Virat Kohli striking a classy 62 off 47 balls in his first competitive outing in nearly a month. Mumbai, with the batting strength they possess, were expected to chase down the target comfortably but Badree, playing his first match of the tournament, shook them up by removing Parthiv Patel, Mitchell McClenaghan and Rohit Sharma in successive balls in the third over. It was a remarkable effort by the West Indian, especially as he picked the hat-trick in the Powerplay. He dismissed Patel and Rohit with a googly — the left-hander offered a simple catch to Gayle at short extra-cover, while Rohit had his stumps rattled. The spinner had a bit of luck, too, as he dismissed McClenaghan with a low full-toss. After the hat-trick, he dismissed the in-form Nitish Rana to leave Mumbai at 33/5, and finished his spell with incredible figures of 4-1-9-4.
Pollard, Krunal fight back
What followed was some sensible batting from Pollard and Krunal. They eschewed unnecessary risks and looked to build a partnership to help the side recover from the huge setback. They kept rotating the strike and hitting occasional boundaries to keep their side in the hunt. In the 16th over, bowled by Pawan Negi, Pollard smashed two big sixes and brought down the equation to 33 runs needed off 24 balls. Hardik Pandya finished the game by smashing a six off Tymal Mills over long-on.
Earlier, RCB failed to capitalise on the good work done by Kohli, managing just 31 runs off the last five overs. Kohli, out of action for almost a month, got into the groove in no time. After mistiming a short ball off Harbhajan Singh for a single in the second over of the innings, Kohli found his touch. In the next over, bowled by pacer Tim Southee, he smashed a six and two fours to demonstrate that he was back to his best. His opening partner Chris Gayle (22 off 27), however, failed to unleash the big hits he is known for. Though the West Indian did manage to hit a six off Harbhajan, he was far from his best. Kohli, who smashed five boundaries and two sixes, got to his half-century by dispatching a full-toss off Jasprit Bumrah for a maximum. However, RCB lost their way after his dismissal in the 16th over, struggling to 127/5 from 110/1 in a space of 17 balls.
