Liberals targeting Conservative party’s record on the economy

OTTAWA — The Liberals are taking aim at Stephen Harper’s assertion that the Conservatives are the best choice for voters seeking stability in the midst of global economic turmoil.
The Liberal party is trotting out some of its economic specialists in a bid to explode what they call the “absurd” myth that the Conservatives are prudent economic managers.
Toronto candidate John McCallum, a former bank economist, says Canada is the only G7 country in recession.
And he says only one other country — fiscal basket case Greece — has seen its stock market plunge further than Canada’s.
Toronto candidate Chrystia Freeland, a former journalist and author of books on income inequality, says Harper’s government has run eight consecutive deficits and, whether or not Harper will admit it, the books will remain in the red this year.
By contrast, the Liberals say their party proved in the mid-1990s that it can eliminate deficits, balance the books and stimulate economic growth.
