Kenny wins keirin gold to take haul to six

Laura Trott

Britain’s Jason Kenny won the men’s track cycling keirin, taking his gold medal haul to six and equalling Chris Hoy’s record for the country’s most Olympic titles. In a race that was controversially restarted twice without disqualifying any riders, Kenny ultimately had too much pace down the final stretch, recovering from a slow start to finish just clear. It was his third triumph in Rio, having won in the team sprint and the men’s sprint before the keirin. After taking gold, Kenny embraced his fiancee and fellow gold medal winner Laura Trott, who was in tears.
Cancer survivor, 54, strikes gold
He’s 54 and one of Latin America’s most legendary sailors. Besides age, Argentine helmsman Santiago Lange overcame more than his rivals to win gold along with crew Cecilia Carranza Saroli in the Nacra 17 mixed-sex catamaran class. A year ago, he lost a lung to cancer. And though he credited his sons Yago and Klaus, representing Argentina in the men’s 49er two-person skiff, for being his “strength”, Lange has been a great inspiration himself. He’s competing in his sixth Olympics and first since 2008. The gold is his third medal, after winning two bronze in the now discontinued Tornado catamaran class. Reuters
24-year-old Trott wins 4th gold
Four races in two Olympics. Four gold medals for Laura Trott. Not bad for a woman who says she still feels “like a little girl riding around on her bicycle”. Britain’s Trott romped to victory in the women’s track cycling omnium. Last week she led the team pursuit quartet to victory in a world record time, becoming the first British woman to win a total of three Olympic gold medals. Now she has four and at the age of 24 there is no telling how many she might eventually collect.
Georgian lifts gold as Iran cry foul
Security forces were called to the Olympic weightlifting arena after Iranian coaches reacted furiously when Georgia’s Lasha Talakhadze beat Behdad ‘Salimi’ Salimikordasiabi with a world record tally in the men’s super-heavyweights. Tensions rose when Salimi’s second 245kg clean and jerk attempt was approved by two of the three judges only to be overruled by all five members of the jury. Iran claimed there was a conspiracy led by an Iraqi on the jury, and the lifter and his team charged threateningly at the jury.
