Beirut, December 5: Islamic State said in an online radio broadcast on Saturday that two followers of the Islamist militant group had carried out Wednesday’s attack on a social services agency party in California in which 14 people were killed.
“Two followers of Islamic State attacked several days ago a centre in San Bernadino in California,” the group’s daily broadcast al-Bayan said.
A news agency that supports Islamic State said on Friday the attackers were followers of the group. US government sources have said there is no evidence the attack was directed by the militant group, or that the organisation even knew who the attackers were.
Soon after the deadly shooting in California, a flurry of tweets by supporters of Islamic State boasted of the terror group’s connections to the attack in which 14 people were killed and 21 others injured.
In a report — the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT) — a US-based non-governmental body that investigates terror incidents, said that a mid-level IS commander who variously refers to himself as Jazrawi_DAESH tweeted that the Pakistani-origin couple who carried out the attack were “special agents of IS” and that they murdered the innocents in “response to so called US bombing of Muslims”.
