Heavy rain in Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali throws life out of gear

Chandigarh, August 21
The skies opened up on Monday in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali and it rained misery on the roads. The water accumulated on the roads made traffic move at a snail’s pace.
The rain started around 6 am, and in two hours most tricity roads, especially the roundabouts, were flooded with knee-deep water.
Vehicular traffic was badly hit as several vehicles broke down on the flooded roads. Schoolchildren and office-goers were stuck in traffic jams.

In Chandigarh, SSP (Traffic) Shashank Anand was seen regulating the traffic.
In Panchkula, most roundabouts were flooded because of waterlogging and it being office time, people found it difficult to reach their working places. In many cases, the distance they would traverse in 15 to 20 minutes took them close to two hours.
Mohali was no better with water accumulating in low-lying areas. Agitated residents of Phase 5 blocked the main road following the alleged lackadaisical approach of the MC authorities in connection with waterlogging in their area.

Three fire tenders were pressed into service to take out water from houses in Phases 1, 3B2 and 5.
The tricity people shared the photographs and videos of the flooded roads and the inconvenience the locals were subjected to on the social media.

The hopeless situation also reflected badly on the tricity MC’s preparedness for the monsoon season.

Meanwhile, the MeT office has predicted rain in the region till Tuesday.
No loss of life or property has been reported so far.
