Gurdaspur, A Rs 4-crore pure grade heroin haul from a peon of the Gurdaspur Municipal Committee (MC) has shocked residents in this border district where such large-scale narcotic recoveries are often made near the wire fencing at the international border.
Peon Bharat Gill and his wife Anita Gill were nabbed around midnight after their car was searched at a check post on the Bariar bypass and the contraband recovered. The couple was coming from Amritsar.
SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar said the couple had been under the scanner for quite some time. “DSP (Special branch) Gurbans Singh Bains was entrusted with the task of keeping a track on them after we received concrete information that they were bringing in a large consignment from Amritsar,” said the SSP.
Bharat told the police that his brother Amit Gill, alias Gori, ran a smuggling racket from inside the Kapurthala jail and he (Bharat) was just a small player in it. Amit Gill is serving jail term in an NDPS case. DSP Bains, who was following the movements of the accused couple for the last fortnight, said Amit Gill kept a mobile phone with him through which he used to coordinate with his colleagues over smuggling activities.
The Kapurthala jail authorities have been alerted over the matter.
“We are still investigating the extent of the smuggling racket run by the Gill family. Questioning of Bharat has revealed that he was bringing the consignment from Tarn Taran. As it happens in such cases, he was trying to dodge the police by taking a circuitous route to enter Gurdaspur. This is just a tip of the iceberg. We have indeed stumbled upon something big,” the DSP added.
