New Delhi: Internet search giant Google on Tuesday celebrated 64th birthday of late American astronaut Sally Ride with an animated doodle on its homepage.
Born on May 26, 1951, in Los Angeles, Sally joined NASA in 1978 at the age of 32, and became the first American woman in space and still remains the youngest American astronaut to travel to space.
She was also a physicist, a science writer, and an inspirational advocate for keeping kids excited about science as they go through school.
Sally, who would have been 64 today, captured the nation’s imagination as a symbol of the ability of women to break barriers.
She left NASA in 1987 after flying twice on the space shuttle Challenger.
After leavinf NASA, she worked for two years at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Arms Control, then the University of California, San Diego as a professor of physics.
She was the only person who served on the committees that investigated the Challenger and Columbia space shuttle disasters.
Sally died on July 23, 2012, at the age of 61, from pancreatic cancer.
