“Even after 70 years of independence”; villages of Punjab are still denied of drinking water: Kejriwal

TEJA RUHELA (FAZILKA): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal found it really shocking, that the basic amenity of life i.e. availability of drinking water missing in the state. When he came to this village for reality check of State Government’s claim of ‘development’, he found that several villages of Punjab are still deprived of the safe drinking water as a result most of the families of the area were affected by the water-borne deceases.

At Teja Ruhela village, which coincidently falls under the State Health Minister Surjit Jiyani, mothers were crying, not for flyovers, roads or any other development, but for drinking water as no state government so far, be it of SAD-BJP or Congress, ever gave any heed to their ‘cry’.

As soon as convoy of Kejriwal reached the village, within minutes, several mothers carrying their kids in their laps, some of them got completely blind, due to contaminated water, rued that instead of providing them drinking water, authorities just printed the walls with warning “groundwater is unfit for human consumption”.

One of the villagers, Gurdip Singh revealed his son has lost sight in one eye when he was barely two years old due to contaminated water.

Another villager, Jasvir Singh has the same horrific tale to narrate as his both of the kids turned handicapped and even lost their hairs. The state in which villages are deprived of basic Water availability could never be tagged as “developed”, said Kejriwal.

Another female kid, who will turn 12 this year, was born blind, and she cannot keep her eyelids open for long as it hurts.

“There is no other source from which we can draw drinking water,” villagers who live on the Indo-Pak border said adding that on the one hand they are in fear of firing from across the border and here they are forced to live in such a poor plight.

The villagers claimed that the groundwater has become toxic as there is a high incidence of blindness in addition to mental and other physical abnormalities among villagers.

“If a state government fails to provide even drinking waters to people, it has no moral right to continue in power”, Delhi Chief Minister said adding that AAP Government took it a priority to provide safe drinking water to all the citizens of Delhi.

This was not the condition of only Teja Ruhela, but almost 13 villages of the area were facing the same condition, villagers claimed.

Shocked over such a worse condition, Kejriwal said “I assure you, once AAP voted to power, within one month we will ensure safe drinking water in all these villages”.

“I have not seen such a bad situation in my entire life”, Kejriwal said. “Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal claims of development, this is the development he has brought? He quipped.

Among others who addressed the villagers include, State Convenor of AAP, Sucha Singh Chhotepur and Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann. Others, who were accompanying Delhi CM, include MP Sadhu Singh, Sanjay Singh, Ashish Khaitan and Himmat Singh Shergil.
