Council candidate contacts police after door smashed, tires slashed

Toronto, A spokesman for Ward 12 candidate Lekan Olawoye says the campaign has been the target of vandalism for the second time in recent months after the door to Olawoye’s Eglinton Avenue office was smashed in over the weekend.
Matt McNama, Olawoye’s deputy campaign manager, said police have been notified of the incident, which occurred sometime after the official opening of the campaign headquarters, located at 2536 Eglinton Avenue, on Saturday.
The incident, according to McNama, is not the first time Olawoye has been targeted by vandals. He said the tires of the candidate’s car were slashed in his driveway two months ago.
“Lekan has been campaigning since January 2, 2014 in Ward 12 and continues to canvass this morning, even after finding yet another act of violence aimed towards his campaign,” McNama said in a written statement.
“Lekan refuses to be intimidated. The residents of Ward 12 need a fresh start now, more than ever.”
Olawoye is one of four candidates registered to run in Ward 12, including incumbent Frank Di Giorgio.
McNama said that given the recent incidents, police have assured Olawoye that his campaign office and his home will be patrolled regularly.
Toronto police confirm that officers did receive a mischief call for an address on Eglinton Avenue West.
Const. Jennifer Sidhu said that when officers arrived, they found that multiple glass doors were shattered at a few different addresses. Toronto police, however, had no information about an incident at the address of the campaign office.
Sidhu said she is unsure whether the perpetrators intended to break in to the offices.
