CHANDIGARH: The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission Chairman, Mr. Rajesh Bagha has strongly batted for the need to have common cremation grounds in villages and cities of the state so as to promote and further strengthen communal harmony and brotherhood leading to eradication of social evils. He also advocated having electric crematoriums as the prime need of the hour.
In a statement here today, Mr. Bagha said that in most of the villages of the state, there are separate cremation grounds for each religious community and these cremation grounds receive monetary grants from governments at regular intervals. Calling for arresting this trend, he said that only one cremation ground should be set up in villages and cities if it can suffice keeping in view the population. He also said that cremation grounds should have facilities for electric cremation as this would lead to reducing the environmental pollution and the need for fuel besides stopping the trend of chopping of trees.
Disclosing more, Mr. Bagha said that senior advocate of Punjab & Haryana High Court, Mr. H.C. Arora had brought this matter to the attention of the commission through an application in which he had stated that steps must be initiated for establishing common cremation grounds in order to get rid of the menace of a grave societal evil like casteism.
Divulging more, Mr. Bagha said that the commission had instructed the Rural Development and Panchayat Department, Punjab, acting upon which the department prepared a plan for constructing common cremation grounds. He further elaborated that the department had also formulated a plan to disburse a grant of Rs. 5 lakh per village to those villages who are willing to go for common cremation grounds. He also said that the commission has now directed the department to modify the plans and include the facility of solar and electric cremation facility.
Mr. Bagha also informed that people face difficulty in performing the last rites of their near and dear ones owing to separate cremation grounds which often lack proper infrastructure. He said that there should be proper arrangement of drinking water, availability of electricity, Concretization of approach roads to the cremation grounds, planting of trees in the cremation grounds, Construction of permanent sheds and platforms apart from having facility of solar and electric cremation so that people face no problem in cremating their beloved ones.
