Chandigarh, February 25: The Punjab Congress Legislature Party chief Mr Charanjit Singh Channi today demanded longer session of the state Assembly beginning March 8 that would end on March 22.

Channi pointed out that leaving out four days of weekends (Sundays and Saturdays), then two non-official days, one day for budget, one day for obituaries, one day governor address, only six days are left for the discussions on important issues related to the state and people of Punjab.

Channi further said that he had already written official letter to the Hon” speaker of Punjab vidhan sabha on dated 23rd Feb 2016 to atleast have the session for 25 days. The congress party wanted to take up important issues like increasing number of farmers suicides and Farm workers, atrocities on Dalits, Law and order in Punjab, unemployment among the youth of Punjab, drugs problem, sand and gravel issue, closure of industrial units in Punjab, stopping of welfare schemes for the minorities, education system, job outsourcing and promises which were made by the SAD-BJP in their election manifesto.

Channi said that it was a budget session and moreover, the situation in the state calls for discussion on these issues. He said the session would begin with Governor’s Address followed by discussion. The budget estimates would be presented thereafter. Going by the tentative schedule, the time available would be too less. The tendency to have shorter sessions must be reversed.

Channi said his party demands for extending the session.
