Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has requested his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Shivraj Chauhan to look into the matter of the alleged damage to a gurdwara in Indore during a recent demolition drive and take all possible steps to assuage the sentiments of the Sikh community, which had been hurt by the reported excessive action of the police and municipal authorities.
Captain Amarinder spoke to Shivraj Chauhan on Monday, following reports in a section of the media that gurdwara Kartar Kiran in Indore district had been damaged during the demolition exercise. The Punjan Chief Minister took serious note of the reports suggesting that the sanctity of the religious place had been defiled and the concerned authorities had also misbehaved with the Sikhs there during the demolition.
Captain Amarinder requested the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister to get an inquiry instituted to ascertain the veracity of the media reports, and take suitable action against anyone found guilty of any excesses.
According to a spokesperson in the Punjab CM’s office, Captain Amarinder conveyed to his counterpart in Madhya Pradesh his serious concern at the possibility of tensions flaring up in the wake of the incident and urged him to intervene to ensure that the issue is resolved at the earliest.
The Madhya Pradesh chief minister has assured Captain Amarinder that he would personally look into the matter and ensure the Sikh community’s welfare. He further told the Punjab Chief Minister that his government was committed to upholding the principles of secularism and would take immediate steps to protect the interests of the Sikh community, which was an integral part of the state’s population, according to the spokesperson.
