Capt Amarinder acquitted in Amritsar Improvement Trust case by Mohali court

Chandigarh, Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh was today acquitted in the Amritsar Improvement Trust case by a Mohali court.

It was due to this case that he was declared unseated from the state Assembly on September 10, 2008 that was quashed by the Supreme Court in 2010.

He was accused of graft and violating rules in exempting 32.10 acres, granted to the Amritsar Improvement Trust, a private promoter, from the scheme of land acquisition. A special committee of the Assembly, which investigated the matter, held Capt. Singh guilty leading to his expulsion.

This issue was raised in the Assembly first by Birdevinder Singh who was then Congress MLA when Amarinder was the chief minister.

This was one of the two files that he did not clear while demitting office. The case was taken up later when Parkash Singh badal took over heading the Akali Dal government.

The case was referred to an Assembly committee after by the Parkash Singh Badal government that held him guilty.

The Supreme Court, while restoring his seat, had made it clear that this would have no bearing on the case itself in the trial court.

The other case that he faces is in Ludhiana court and that relates to city centre.

It is pertinent to mention that it was Capt Amarinder Singh under whose government corruption cases were registered against Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal.
