Badal government’s arrogance led to pitiable plight of farmers: Bhattal

CHANDIGARH:Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal on Friday accused Badal government of being arrogant in its approach pertaining to resolving problems faced by farmers of the
state. She said that pitiable plight of farmers in the state is due to stubborn arrogance on the part of Badal government.

She said that farmers are justified in carrying out protests across various parts of the state demanding proper compensation for massive loss to their cotton crop owing to whitefly attack. She said that Badal government has been found wanting to tackle the situation prudently resulting in derailing of trains in the wake of protests by farmers causing inconvenience to thousands of commuters travelling to their concerned destinations.

Bhattal said that the present situation has arisen due to rampant corruption within state administration stating that laxity of SAD-BJP government led to pesticide scam and as a result spurious pesticides were supplied to farmers resulting in large amount of damage to cotton crop.

Not only this, she said inquiry into the pesticide scam is still in progress, Chief Minister’s Parkash Singh Badal’s assertion that state agriculture Minister Tota Singh is innocent is absolutely inexplicable and unfortunate. She said that pertinent question is that from which authority arrested director Mangal Singh Sandhu got permission to purchase pesticides from controversial company worth Rs. 33 crores.

She said that Badal government cannot simply put its hands off from the fact that why and how the state agriculture ministry allowed purchase of spurious pesticide without checking all the details including quality of pesticides. She said that besides tainted agriculture director, involvement of other officials of agriculture
ministry in the pesticide scam cannot be ruled out.

Senior Congress leader criticized deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal said for terming the protests by farmers being politically motivated. Bhattal said that Sukhbir Badal should accept the failure of Badal government to deal with the problems faced by farmers. She said that farmers are dying in the state but state government seems to havebecome detached showing no compassionate for the plight of farmers.

Former Chief Minister said that SAD-BJP combine government’s present tenure has been disaster for state as it has failed miserably on all fronts. She said that countdown of Badal government has started and
people of state are ready to vote out corrupt regime in the next assembly elections to be held in early 2017.
