Chandigarh, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday said Punjab Congress Chief Captain Amarinder Singh has no moral right to talk about setting up a strong Punjab Lokpal in the state to check corruption if voted to power in 2017, as he was responsible for damaging the constitutional body to the maximum during his tenure as chief minister from 2002 to 2007.
AAP, Sangrur MP, Bhagwant Mann, said Amarinder had reduced the prestigious institute of Punjab Lokpal next to nothing that was meant to check corruption at the highest places in the government especially among the ministers.
Amarinder was primarily responsible for making the Punjab Lokpal institute completely dysfunctional due to his constant interference in its day to day functioning.
” It is an open secret how Capt Amarinder saved senior congress leaders such as Lal Singh, Samsher Singh Dullo and Bal Mukand Sharma from the clutches of Punjab Lokpal who were facing serious corruption charges”, said Mann.
Later when SAD-BJP alliance came to power under Parkash Singh Badal he too worked overtime to weaken the Punjab Lokpal. ” Badal stifled funds and did not even provide the bare minimum staff required for the smooth functioning of the institute “, said Mann.
Mann revealed that due to poor policies of both Badal and Amarinder Punjab Lokpal today has less than one dozen people working in it. ” The investigative wing of Punjab Lokpal which works directly under Punjab DGP and normally has more than 50 staffers at various positions has only one IG, two head constables and four constables now”.
Mann said Amarinder has ben completely misleading people of Punjab for giving a strong Lokpal whereas the investigation in his own corruption cases has come to a complete stand still courtesy his ‘good relations’ with the Badals.
