Akali Dal supporter, his wife shot dead in Sangrur

Sangrur, Sept 3: A Shiromani Akali Dal supporter, Dr Charnjit Garg, and his wife Pooja were shot dead here late on Sunday night. The couple were going towards Raj Senior Secondary School when they were shot.

Police have registered a murder case against four people. They have been identified as Jaidev aka Jojo, Rakesh Sharma aka Jassi, his brother Pradeep Sharma and a local former Municipal Counsellor, Pompy.

Police said the accused intercepted the car of the couple near the church of Sardar Basti around 11 pm and shot them.

“Doctors are conducting postmortem of the bodies. The bodies have visible injuries of sharp-edged weapons. We suspect the accused first stabbed Dr Charnjit and then shot the couple,” said Palwinder Singh, SHO, Sangrur.

Garg was an active worker of the Shiromani Akali Dal and was said to be close to former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha Member Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa.

Police said Garg was demanding his money back from Jassi.

“Our teams are conducting raids to arrest the accused,” said Dr Sandeep Garg, SSP Sangrur.
