44 Girls students taken admission at IIT Ropar with 248 boys

Ropar,  IIT Ropar has achieved a better representation of female students this year from 5.5% in 2017 to 14% in 2018. The percentage growth in the proportion of female candidate in IIT Ropar has substantially increased with the novel initiative of reserving seats for girls under supernumerary seats. IIT Ropar has put a special focus on reaching out to female candidates. Right from setting up a special helpline for them and putting in place a helpdesk to answer various queries. IITRopar has also participated in the Open House hosted by IIT Delhi to help girl students for choosing the better options for them.

In terms of absolute numbers, 247 Boys and 44 female students got admission to IIT Ropar — an increase by 15% in girl’s admission. “With excellent ambience and location being situated near the river Satluj and serene beauty of nature, the campus holds best infrastructure and above all best in R&D and of course integration of student activities that provide rich overall individual growth, especially to female students via various extra and co-curricular opportunities make it a much desired destination for girls, says IIT Ropar Director, Prof. S.K.Das.

Balancing the ratio of 5:1, IIT Ropar has achieved the target of enrolling 44 girls students in current session. First time in the history of IIT Ropar, 10 girl students took admission in Mechanical Engineering Department with 67 boys. In computer Science and Engineering 10 girls took admission with 55 boys. In Electrical also 10 girls took admission with 58 boys. In Chemical Engineering 4 girl students took admission with 19 boys. In Civil Engineering 6 girl students took admission with 29 boys. In Metallurgical and Materials Engineering 2 girl students took admission with 10 boys and in Dual degree program 1 girl took admission with 10 boys.

Such increase in the number of the female strength will automatically motivate and become a role model for many other girls and in the long run make a higher proportion of female students in the IITs. Many parents do not want to send girls to places like Kota for coaching. Such factors have kept the proportion of female students in the IITs abysmally low. With such an increase, now girls will get opportunities to be part of premier institutes of India, says Prof. Harpreet Singh, Dean ICSR, II & PR, IIT Ropar.

The institute has also initiated unique 13 day orientation programme for the new entrants which focuses on overall development of the students rather than only giving academic information. The objective is to help both students as well as parents to adjust to the changes after entering the campus. The Institute encourages students to develop their overall personality and skills, rather than just the academic knowledge. After every 5 students a mentor is given who is a second year or a third year Btech student of IIT Ropar so as to help the budding engineers to settle down in a new environment.

The session began on 26th July with a lecture by the Director, IIT Ropar. It also includes a presentation on the academic credit system and a session on the mental health counseling programme among other things. Every day will be a new day for the new entrants with series of activities planned like Bhangra, Zumba Fitness, Human Values, Yoga, Club activities, flash mob, dramatics, sports etc.

Highlighting the unique initiatives, Associate Dean Student Affairs, Dr. C.C.Reddy said that, “IIT Ropar is working not only to bring out an engineer but also encourages to be a confident individual who are not risk-averse. This orientation programme will help them to gel with their seniors and their faculty members.”
