Tarn Taran, July 31
Four Congress workers were injured in a clash between two party factions at Bhikhiwind, near here, last late evening.
The supply contract of mid-day meal material (grain and cereal) to schools in the area is said to be the reason behind the clash. Party leader Rajinder Kumar Babbu Sharma holds the contract. A rival faction led by Surjit Singh Chakiwala, which wants the contract, had been levelling allegations of pilferage against Sharma.
Last evening, the material was being supplied to the schools in a four-wheeler when Surjit Singh and his associates chased the vehicle and reiterated the charges. Sharma’s supporters reached the spot, which led to a clash between both parties.
Sub-Inspector Balwinder Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Bhikhiwind police station, said both factions of the Congress were armed when the clash took place. Balwinder Singh, an associate of Surjit Singh, and three from the other faction — Deepu, Gurmukh Singh Sandpur and Akash Sharma — were injured in the clash, said the SHO.
The SHO confirmed that both sides belonged to the Congress. He said the statements of the injured were being recorded and further action would be taken accordingly.
