26,000 prisoners to receive free tablets for personal use

Technology surely does enhance educational possibilities. Keeping this in mind, the Indiana Department of Corrections (IODC) recently announced that as a part of their newly-introduced initiative, the state-wide prison system will be providing an approximate of 26,000 inmates with a free tablet for their personal use.

According to IndyStar, the plan to put a tablet in every Indiana inmate’s hands could help offenders stay connected with their families and improve their education, which are important ways to keep them from returning to prison.

The proposal by IODC also calls for a secure network and electronic kiosks across the prison system’s 23 facilities.

The IODC describes the new initiative as a “system-wide technology push” which can be used to “further education and personal development by providing inmates with access to classwork and self-help material,” a Fox News report read.

The tablets can be used by inmates for entertainment, including music and movies.

“What we’ve learned is that sometimes through positive reinforcement you gain better performance, better behaviour,” said IODC executive director, William Wilson.
