2 ‘ranis’, rape-accused MLA make electoral battle interesting in Amethi

SP-candidate

Amethi, Two “ranis” (queens) of a “maharaja (king)” pitted against a controversial rape-accused candidate, Samajwadi Party’s Gayatri Prasad Prajapati — voters of the Amethi Assembly are witnessing political dramatics as never before.

The divorced rani, Garima Singh of the BJP, is seeking “justice” from the voters for “all the wrongs done by her husband” — their “maharaj” Sanjay Singh.

His present wife Amita Singh is the Congress candidate who is vying for almost the same votes as Prajapati.

Their parties are otherwise contesting in the state as coalition partners.

Needless to say Sanjay Singh’s entire energies are devoted to ensure that Amita, who represents the party that sent him to the Rajya Sabha, wins Amethi.

In Garima Singh, the BJP seems to have managed quite a “trump card” or so believes its local cadres — Vishuv Mishra, Abhishek Mishra and Gyanendra Bhargava.

“A strong man like Sanjay Singh has been contained in Amethi, otherwise he could have been campaigning for the Congress across the region,” they said.

Sanjay Singh, while devising booth management techniques to counter SP, has another issue to deal with that is to blunt the sentimental support for his “wronged” former wife Garima.

As a teary-eyed, Garima, seeks “nyay” (justice) from people for all the “injustice” meted out to her by Sanjay Singh, the emotional cord she strikes with her listeners is hard to miss .

In contrast is the super confident Amita, who mostly reminds voters of atrocities of sitting Samajwadi MLA Gayatri Prajapati, the “outsider” BSP candidate and the “clueless” BJP nominee but without naming her.

Amita says she has chosen to ignore the “silly and frivolous nonsense” being spread by her BJP’ rival.

“I have been married (to Sanjay Singh) for the past 22 years. I am not responsible for his divorce (to Garima Singh). She (Garima Singh) had many opportunities to approach the court if she felt she had been wronged.

“It is an embarrassing, ugly, underhand situation created by the BJP whose aim is to win the seat at any cost. But the people here know everything… what I have done for them. I don’t even refer to her by name in any of my speeches,” she said.

For that matter Garima Singh also does not mention Amita. But as she campaigns with her daughters and daughter-in-law, she manages to strike the right cord with both women and men.

Men and women at the Bheemi village, where she spoke today, nod their head in sympathy to allegations that Sanjay Singh got the divorce decree by misleading the court and producing someone else as her.

Amita Singh is a former badminton player who once faced charges for conspiring with Sanjay of killing her first husband — badminton player Syed Modi.

They were absolved of the charges but when the BJP supporters talk of “pavitra Sita-like” Garima who does not have a single “daag” on her “anchal”, their reference to the point is hard to miss.
