Toronto,Mayor John Tory has released a radio announcement calling on motorists to drive more carefully after a rash of pedestrian deaths and injuries on Toronto’s roads. The 30-second public service announcement was distributed Sunday to local radio stations.
“Across Toronto, too many pedestrians are being hit and killed on our roads,” Tory says in the announcement. “These accidents are happening on busy streets, in quiet neighbourhoods, at all times of the day and in every part of the city.”
Tory goes on to say that “one death on the roads is one too many” and implores drivers to keep eyes on the road, obey traffic signals, and slow down.
“You’ll get where you’re going, and you might just save a life,” Tory says.
Earlier this week, the city unveiled a new road safety plan aimed at reducing the number of fatalities on Toronto roads. The plan includes a pilot project to have police officers direct traffic at some of the city’s busiest intersections.
Just a day later, a 38-year-old woman was killed and her sister seriously injured after the two were struck by a sport utility vehicle on Bremner Avenue downtown. The cause of the collision is still being investigated.
At least 36 people have died in traffic-related incidents on city streets so far this year, 17 of them pedestrians according to the city.
