With eye on poll, govt gives grants to municipal bodies

Chandigarh, The government today handed over grants worth Rs 75 crore to 131 local bodies, comprising five municipal corporations and 126 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, for development works. The move came at a time when elections to the municipal bodies are round the corner.
In a function organised at Punjab Bhawan, Local Bodies Minister Anil Joshi gave drafts to chief parliamentary secretaries, MLAs, commissioners of municipal corporations, executive officers of nagar panchayats and councils.
Chief Parliamentary Secretaries Som Parkash, NK Sharma, Des Raj Dhugga and Amarpal Singh Bonni Ajnala and Nisara Khatoon Farzana Aalam were present.
Joshi said in the first phase of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Rs 3.5 crore had been given to four municipal corporations. He said grants worth Rs 71.5 crore had been given to 131 local bodies to put the stalled development projects on fast track. He said the financial boost would lead to all round development in the state.
Joshi said Hoshiarpur had got Rs 1.5 crore under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and for development projects, Pathankot got Rs 3.5 crore, Bathinda Rs 1 crore and Moga 1.60 crore.
