New Delhi: Wintry weather continued in several parts of north India as mild snowfall occurred in the higher altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh and many places in Jammu and Kashmir registered near-freezing temperatures.
However, people in Delhi experienced a warm day today as the mercury shot up to 29.7 degrees Celsius, settling four notches above the season’s average.
According to the MeT department, today’s maximum was three notches up from yesterday’s 26.7 degrees Celsius.
Humidity in air oscillated between 33 and 90 percent.
The minimum temperature was recorded as 9.1 degrees Celsius, one notch above the normal.
Temperatures rose across the Valley and settled near the freezing point in most places, giving little respite from the frosty conditions, even as the MeT Department predicted snowfall in the higher reaches today.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar settled at zero degree Celsius, slightly up from the previous night’s minus 0.8 degrees Celsius.
Mercury in Gulmarg also recorded a low of zero degree Celsius, while Pahalgam registered a low of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded 0.7 degrees Celsius, while Qazigund and Kokernag towns in south Kashmir registered minus 1.6 and 0.4 degree Celsius respectively.
Leh, in the frontier region of Ladakh, continued to be the coldest place in the state with the minimum settling at minus 9.7 degrees Celsius as compared to minus 9.9 degrees Celsius the previous night.
The nearby Kargil town recorded a low of minus 9.2 degrees Celsius as against yesterday’s minus 9.8 degrees Celsius.The tribal areas and high mountain passes in Himachal
received another spell of moderate snowfall while lower areas had light rains, further intensifying cold wave conditions in the region.
Thick fog accompanied by strong velocity icy winds lashed the region as sky remained partially overcast.
The Rohtang Pass recorded 15 cm of snowfall till this evening while Lahaul received 5 cm.
The minimum temperatures stayed five to ten degrees below freezing point in high altitude tribal areas while it hovered around freezing point in adjoining areas and lower hills of Kullu, Mandi and Sundernagar which received light rains.
Keylong in tribal Lahaul valley recorded minimum temperature at minus 2.1 degrees Celsius, while Manali and Kalpa registered a low of 0.8 and 1 degrees Celsius, followed by Sundernagar and Bhuntar 2.5, Una 2.8, Chamba 3.8, Solan 4.4, Nahan 6.1, Palampur 7.5, Dharamsala 8 and Shimla 9.5 degrees Celsius.
