Chandigarh, August 5, 2017 -The leader of the opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Sukhpal Singh Khaira has taken serious notice of government’s failure to appoint the Vice Chancellors in the universities of Punjab. In a press release, he said that at present the state universities of Punjab such as Punjabi University, Guru Nanak Dev University and Punjab Technical University are facing gross negligence by the Congress government in the matter of appointment of V.C.s.
Khaira said that for the last five months these universities are running day to day affairs without Vice-Chancellors. He said it shows the Govt.’s apathy towards the field of higher education in state. The delay in appointment is affecting their administrative and academic functioning badly. He said that it is the result of lack of concern of government in providing quality education to the people that the number of admissions has come down steeply in government colleges and universities. Such an indifferent attitude of government is proving dangerous to the education system, which is already on the decline in Punjab.
The LOP stated, that higher education sector of Punjab has become worst than the school education in the state. More than 7000 teaching posts in almost 600 colleges of Punjab are lying vacant and no regular recruitment has been done for the last 20. Instead of filling these posts and giving more facilities the government is giving preference to establishment of new private universities and colleges.
Speaking with the special reference to Punjabi University Patiala, he said that the university is known for providing higher education to the backward area of Malwa region, is now going through acute financial crisis. The LOP appealed to Captain Amrinder Singh led Congress govt., to immediatly rescue the University by providing more financial assistance.
Khaira further stated that, according to U.G.C norms IAS officers cannot be appointed as Vice Chancellors of the universities but the Congress government is violating the rules, by appointing IAS officers as acting Vice-Chancellors. He strongly advocated immediate appointment of V.C.s as per UGC norms in the universities and demanded large scale reforms in higher education sector of Punjab.
