Wheat farmers happy as showers lash region

Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana today received first showers of the season, intensifying the cold conditions in the region but at the same time giving farmers a reason to cheer.
The wet spell will continue for two-three days and the minimum temperatures are expected to fall in the coming week, said the weatherman, adding that days are likely to turn foggy.

Several places in the two states, including Phagwara, Hisar and Bhiwani, and Chandigarh received rainfall due to western disturbances, the MeT department said.
According to experts, the light showers will reduce risks of diseases related with dry winter and will settle the dust and cleanse the hazy space, reducing air pollution.
With 33.2 mm rain recorded in Chandigarh, the showers caused a dip in the maximum temperature that fell from 24.3 degrees C to 15.2 degrees Celsius.
The MeT department has predicted the possibility of more rains in the region in the next 24 hours.
The rain has come as a relief to farmers. High temperature doesn’t augur well for the wheat crop. “The rain has brought down the maximum temperature. It’s good for wheat, mustard and barley,” says Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Agriculture, Dhanpat Singh.
