United Oppn stalls House over Moga molestation

captChandigarh/New Delhi, The death of a teenage girl in Moga after she was allegedly thrown off a moving bus following molestation rocked both Houses of Parliament today.
Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Amarinder Singh said the incident highlighted “deteriorating” law and order in the state.
Outside Parliament, he told reporters, “Imposition of President’s rule in the state is the only option. Elections to the state Assembly “are about 18 to 20 months away and this cannot carry on till then”, the former Punjab CM said.
Amarinder questioned why Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had not been booked when the owners of Uber taxi service were booked after the molestation case in one of their cabs in New Delhi. In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Congress wanted to know whether the FIR included the name of the Badal family, the owner of the transport company.
Led by the Congress, a united opposition forced two adjournments in the Rajya Sabha demanding discussion over the Moga incident.
Calling for Centre’s intervention, Ambika Soni of the Congress said there was a complete breakdown of law and order in Punjab. She found support from Sitaram Yechury of the CPM and BSP supremo Mayawati, who also demanded imposition of President’s rule in the state.
Inside the House, Amarinder’s words were drowned amidst the din of sloganeering by the Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) MPs demanding a separate high court for the state of Telangana.
In the Lok Sabha the Akalis, Prem Singh Chandumajra, Ranjit Singh Bharampura and Sher Singh Ghubaya said Amarinder was trying to vitiate the atmosphere in the state. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan reminded Amarinder that the Moga incident had already been raised in the House. Amarinder said he was raising his concern over law and order in Punjab and Parliament was a platform to highlight it.
Outside the House, Amarinder said the administration in Punjab had been politicised. “Nobody is keen on action, including the DGP,” he added.
