Shanghai, French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga debuted on Monday at the Shanghai Masters with a comfortable win over Germany’s Florian Mayer. Tsonga managed to defeat Mayer 6-3, 6-2 in 71 minutes .
The Frenchman, ranked 13th in the world, will now face Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic in the second round.
The Shanghai Masters is the penultimate ATP World Tour Masters tournament of the year, and includes the world’s tennis stars, except Roger Federer, Kei Nishikori and Dominic Thiem.

hong kong: US tennis player Venus Williams kicked off her Hong Kong Open campaign in style by beating Japanese Risa Ozaki on Monday in the first round of the tournament. Williams, second-seeded, defeated her Japanese opponent 6-4, 6-1. The American managed to reach the semifinals last year, and will now play the second round against France’s Alize Cornet, who upset the other American, Varvara Lepchenko, 6-3, 6-2.
World No. 1 German Angelique Kerber will begin her journey at the Hong Kong Open against Greece’s Maria Sakkari.
Sharapova to test comeback waters
hong kong: Maria Sharapova, targeting an April return to the WTA after the reduction of her doping ban, will try to start sharpening her game on Monday in the friendly confines of a charity event in Las Vegas.
Her appearance alongside such stars as Martina Navratilova and Andy Roddick will delight her legion of fans, who remain faithful despite the controversy Sharapova stirred last week with her charge that the International Tennis Federation wanted to make an example of her in her doping case.
