Toronto Police warn public of dangers of using research drugs recreationally

Toronto, Toronto police are warning the public of the dangers of recreationally using drugs, normally used for research purposes, after two men unintentionally overdosed on them.
Inspector Howie Page told reporters during a press conference Friday that the men purchased the drugs online in the belief that they would mimic the effects of cocaine and ecstasy.
“The victims may have purchased the substances with the belief that they could use them in a recreational manner,” said Page. “These instances are of great concern to the Toronto Police Service and there exists a need to warn the public of the potential dangers with the recreational use of research drugs.”

Research drugs have legal uses, but they are not regulated for human consumption and could be lethal, said Page. He explained that companies sell them by the gram, but there are no quality control checks in place to monitor who the drugs are being sold to.
Police are working in conjunction with Health Canada, Canada Border Services Agency and the Public Prosecution Service of Canada to determine if there are any laws being broken in the classification and sale of these drugs.
The two victims who recently overdosed are in their 20s. Paramedics and hospital staff were able to save their lives, said Page.
