Tornado:- There were no immediate reports of injuries after a series of strong thunderstorms swept through parts of the GTA Saturday.
Environment Canada issued tornado watches for parts of the GTA and a number of other areas east of Toronto shortly before 5 p.m.
The watch included Pickering, Oshawa, Peterborough, Kingston and a number of other areas. The agency said conditions were favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which could produce tornadoes.
Tornado warnings were also issued briefly for some areas near Kingston, including Picton, Napanee, Consecon and Sandbanks Park.
“Latest indications suggest increasing potential for severe thunderstorms to develop and produce isolated tornadoes into this evening as a frontal system moves through,” Environment Canada said in its statement.
However by 8:30 p.m., most of the watches and warnings in and around the GTA had ended, though some eastern parts of the province remain under scattered tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings.
No injuries have been reported, however some images shared on social media indicate that some local areas sustained some damage.
Environment Canada did not immediately confirm that any tornadoes or funnel clouds had touched down.
Toronto was under a severe thunderstorm watch for much of the day, but that watch ended at around 7:45 p.m.
After several days of intense, muggy heat, the city is set to see several days of more moderate temperatures over the next few days, with highs ranging from 20 C to 26 C and mainly sunny conditions in the forecast.
