Chandigarh, After the municipal councils and nagar panchayats elections, the SAD-BJP alliance has also swept the polls to the six municipal corporations which went to the polls on February 22. The combine won majority in four — Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Pathankot and Moga. It touched the halfway mark in Phagwara while Mohali returned a hung verdict with the SAD-BJP falling short of majority by two seats. The BJP has more reasons to cheer today while the Akalis suffered some drubbing unlike in the results of the municipal council and nagar panchayat elections declared yesterday. The SAD suffered jolts in Pathankot and Mohali. The party failed to open its account in Pathankot. None of its eleven candidates could win any seat while the BJP won 29 of the 39 seats it had contested. The two could not affect a proper seat-sharing agreement in Pathankot with the BJP arbitrarily announcing its candidates at 39 seats. The BJP, known to have a good urban base, has lived to the billing by getting the maximum number of 85 seats compared to 82 by Akalis out of the results of 301 wards of all six corporations and bypoll at three wards in Patiala and Jalandhar declared today. The election for one ward in Pathankot was postponed due to the death of a candidate while another in Mohali has been sealed by a court order. The BJP has a lead over Akalis in three corporations — Phagwara, Pathankot and Hoshiarpur. The Akalis got 82 wards while the Congress 68. Independents, mostly rebel candidates and some self-styled candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which did not contest the elections, got 64 seats. In Mohali, the Akalis suffered at the hands of a group of rebel Akalis led by realtor Kulwant Singh, who was suspended from the party after he refused to accept the selection of candidates. Of the total 50 seats, the Akalis with 16 and BJP with 7 could get 23 seats only. The performance of the Congress was not as bad as expected. It got 68 wards in its kitty while bagging more seats than the BJP in Bathinda and Mohali. It equalled the BJP’s tally of 17 seats in Hoshiarpur.
