Patiala, March 25
PPCC president Capt Amarinder Singh today said that had CM Parkash Singh Badal not played a double game on the SYL issue, the states legal position would have been stronger.
“Thanks to Badal’s deceit, we lost in the Supreme Court what we had gained in the Vidhan Sabha,” said the former CM who had enacted the Termination of Agreements Act in 2004 in a statement issued here today.
“Badal, like an old fox, and in his characteristic way played a double game by first getting the bill passed in the Assembly but did not send it to the Governor for his assent apparently to provide crucial time to Haryana to approach the SC which ordered status quo thus nullifying everything that was done in the Vidhan Sabha.
He recalled the Termination of Agreements Act, which had became a law within six hours. “We passed the bill at noon, got the Governor’s assent in the afternoon and notified it before evening the same day,” he pointed out.
Amarinder said no matter how much Badal may claim credit on the SYL issue, he (CM) has always betrayed Punjab’s interests. It was Badal who accepted Rs 2 crore in 1977 from the then Haryana Chief Minister Devi Lal for constructing the canal, he added.
The former CM also took a dig at Badal and his Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal for getting themselves declared as ‘messiah of farmers’ and ‘saviour of waters,’ respectively, when actually they had betrayed the people on both counts.
“It is amusing to see that they are trying to celebrate defeat when actually they should feel sorry and be ashamed,” he remarked, adding that farmers were committing suicide under Badal’s rule.
