Suspected IM operatives planning to target city in the festive season : Delhi Police

New Delhi : Suspected Indian Mujahideen operatives were planning to target the national capital in the festive season, said Delhi Police Special Cell sources on Sunday.

Sources said that alleged IM agent Azaz Sheikh, who was arrested on Saturday from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was sent to recce the capital during the festive season. Sources added that Sheikh was working behind the scenes.

He was handed over bag containing explosives which were used in the German Bakery blast in Pune. He was essentially the logistics man arranging fake IDs for operatives and arranging funds through hawala operations.

Sheikh allegedly met with IM chief Yasin Bhatkal only once.

Sheikh used to send anonymous mails to media houses claiming responsibility after Jama Masjid and Varanasi blasts in 2010.

“A resident of Pune in Maharashtra, Sheikh was ‘silent’ India-based techie, logistics man and hawala router of the banned terrorist organisation.

“He had close links with IM founders Riyaz Bhatkal and Mohsin Chowdhary, who had fled to Pakistan after Batla House encounter. He is the brother-in-law of Chowdhary and directly took commands from these two from across the border,” said SN Shrivastava, Special Commissioner (Special Cell) of Delhi Police.
