Batala, Five suspected gangsters helped an undertrial prisoner escape from police custody in Batala on Monday.
Initial reports said that some policemen were taking the prisoner, identified as Harvinder Singh, who was lodged in a prison in Hoshiapur, to a court in Batala for an appearance in a criminal case.
While their vehicle stood at a railway crossing, five people suspected to belong to gangster Vicky Gounder’s gang stepped out of a car and threw chilli power into the eyes of the accompanying policemen, before they escaped with Singh.
Police have set up check posts across the city to catch the escapee.
