* Says Punjabi fraternity proved it will not be vilified
Chandigarh, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal and party general secretary Bikram Singh Majithia today thanked Punjabis for standing with the SAD in its fight against drugs by congregating in lakhs against all odds in bone chilling cold weather at Attari, Hussainiwala and Sadiqi.
Extending thanks, Mr Badal and Mr. Majithia in a joint statement here said the unprecedented gatherings of Punjabis near the Indo-Pak border had proved that the entire Punjabi fraternity was united on the issue of drugs and would opposed this menace in league with the SAD. They said the strength shown by Punjabis would give further pace to the ongoing successful war on drugs launched by Punjab Government.
The leaders said the dharnas had also served as a clear warning to anti-social elements across the border that Punjabis would not allow drugs to enter their State from Pakistan.
They said the label imposed on Punjabis of drug addicts was a challenge to the pride of the community and that they had risen to the occasion to give a befitting reply to those why wanted to defame them. The leaders said the participants of dharna had also vowed not to allow drug traffickers to make Punjab a transit besides playing a significant role for complete elimination of this menace from the state.
Describing the gatherings as historic in numbers, Mr Majithia while speaking on behalf of the party, said he felt humbled and also proud that the country’s second oldest political party had launched a national war against drugs. “Now that the entire Punjabi community has given us its mandate we are committed to eradicating this menace from society”, he added.
