Suicide by farmer: ASI suspended, 8 booked

Fazilka, A day after a farmer of Shajrana village in the district committed suicide following alleged harassment by his neighbours and police officials, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was suspended today.
Mukhtiar Singh, SP (D), said ASI Amarjit Singh had been placed under suspension, while Station House Office (SHO) Arniwala police station Barjinder Singh had been sent to the Police Lines. “We are conducting an inquiry into the matter. Those found guilty will not be spared,” he said.
Ashok Kumar Sharma, DSP, said eight persons whose names figured in the suicide note had been booked under Section 306 of the IPC (abetment of suicide). They are Hukum Chand, Ashok Kumar, Lal Chand, Ramesh Kumar, Surinder Kumar, Sandeep Kumar, Amandeep and Lachhman Dass.
Jasbir Singh, reportedly owing allegiance to the SAD, had committed suicide by hanging himself at his house at Shajrana village last evening. He had alleged in the suicide note that the SHO, ASI and his neighbourers with whom he had a dispute over water course had been harassing him. Jasbir Singh’s neighbour had got an FIR registered against him over the dispute about a year ago.
Sources said the police took the action only after the family members and relatives of the deceased along with villagers staged a dharna on the busy Bansi Pakora Chowk late last evening and again this morning.
