Stress: Scary things it’s doing to your body and how to deal with it

h1Stress can be defined as anything that poses a challenge or a threat to our well-being. The word ‘stress’ is generally used whenever we feel overloaded with work or other activities and wonder whether we can really cope up with the pressures put on us.

Stress can be triggered by the pressures of everyday responsibilities at work or at home.

However, the most common causes of stress are – bereavement, financial problems, job issues, illness, relationships, etc.

How stress is affecting your body

While stress is a normal part of life, chronic stress can affect your overall health.

It is said that stress that continues without relief can lead distress – a negative stress reaction.

Distress can give rise to physical symptoms such as elevated blood pressure, chest pain, headaches, stomach upset, sleep problem, fatigue and change in sex drive.

Stress can also bring on certain side effects on your mood and behaviour – anxiety, sadness, restlessness, depression, overeating or undereating, anger, forgetfulness, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, frequent crying, social withdrawal.

Dealing with stress

If you feel that you have stress symptoms, adopting steps to manage stress can do wonders to your health. Try stress management strategies – exercise, relaxation techniques, breathing, etc., as such activities will help you manage your stress better.

You should get plenty of sleep and eat a balanced diet.

Cut down on your caffeine intake.

Say not to tobacco and alcohol or cut them down as these won’t help.
