Chandigarh, May 31: The issue of special security arrangements that continue to be extended by Punjab police to some influential Akali leaders finally erupted in the cabinet meeting with the ministers objecting to this patronage to Akalis.
This was raised with specific reference to the security details for former revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia for his travel from Amritsar to Chandigarh.
The police note in this regard was presented in the meeting by Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. He mentioned the name of Director General of Police Suresh Arora in this Arora.
The note had names of the officials on the route detailed for Majithia’s security.
Several other ministers joined him in pointing out that this issue of police continuing to provide special security arrangements had been raised earlier too. They said several of the Akali leaders had been provided escort vehicles that they don’t deserve.
The ministers stated this the impression continued to prevail among the people that such arrangements were continuing as the Congress was missed up with the Akalis. This could prove to be costly for the Congress.
They called upon Capt Amarinder Singh to take corrective action at the earliest.
Yet another issue that came up was the outbursts of Local Bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and it was felt that this could be damaging for the Congress.
Significantly, Sidhu too tried to hit back saying an adviser of Capt Aamarinder Singh was patronising a leader in Amritsar who was opposing him.
“Do you think I am behind it”, Capt Amarinder Singh is learnt to have asked him.
The matter ended there.
