12 years ago on this day, Badshah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan returned as Don – one of his most loved characters. It’s been over a decade since the release of the sequel, titled Don: The King Is Back aka Don 2, and SRKians are still not over the swag and allure he brought to the screen.
Sadly, the superstar has bid adieu to Farhan Akhtar’s popular franchise and actor Ranveer Singh has come on board to play the legendary role. But, for this writer and millions of Shah Rukh fans, there will only be one Don, always and forever. Here’s why!
Matching OG Don’s energy
In 1978, megastar Amitabh Bachchan made this fictional character iconic. His body language, dialogue delivery and on-point performance as the anti-hero left everyone amazed. For decades, no one could imagine taking the place of the OG Don. And then came SRK’s version in 2006, sweeping us off our feet.
It would be extremely unfair to compare the two, but one has to agree that Shah Rukh did what no one imagined – left a significant mark on this popular character. So much so that many labelled him as the ‘New Don’, a title Ranveer Singh will have to work rather hard to achieve.
The voice of Don
“Mere Dushman Samajh Rahe The Main Ab Kabhi Lautke Na Aaunga… Ek Gumnaami Ka Samundar Hai, Us Mein Hi Jaake Doob Jaaunga… Abhi Baaki Meri Kahani Hai, Sari Duniya Ko Joh Sunaani Hai … Mujhe Pehchano, Dekho Main Hoon Kaun… Aa Raha Hoon Palat Ke Main Hoon Don, Don, Don…”
Could you not hear SRK’s husky voice in your head while reading this famous dialogue? And that’s why King Khan will always be Don.
It’s all in the eyes
“Have you seen that man’s eyes?” Karan Johar rightly said when someone asked him why no one else has been able to recreate the SRK magic in romance films. But, according to us, this stands true even with the Don franchise.
After being the King of Romance for years, Shah Rukh made his fans, critics and even haters fall in love with his villainous role.
Many fans would do anything to watch the movie again for the first time only to see him in all his glory.
Fans will never forget the ASLI Don
After the promo of Ranveer Singh’s upcoming adaption was shared online, netizens didn’t mince words. An X user perfectly summed up the internet’s reaction, writing, “I like Ranveer and he’s an excellent actor… But this doesn’t suit him… The style SRK brings in is unmatchable… They shouldn’t have called this #Don3 and just started afresh.”
Another expressed, “No matter how hard you #FarhanAkhtar try, Ranveer Singh can’t replicate the effortless swag and magnetic charm that @iamsrk brings as #Don. SRK as Don is in a league of his own and is irreplaceable.”
We can’t help but agree.
Because it’s Shah Rukh Khan
Ranveer is undeniably one of the finest actors in the Hindi film industry today. He may have proven his mettle with movies like Lootera, Bajirao Mastani, Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, and more, but he has (forgive us for pointing out the obvious) got nothing on the Badshah of Bollywood.
When SRK gets into a character, he makes it his own forever. After all, can you imagine anyone else as Veer Pratap Singh, Mohan Bhargav, Ajay Sharma, Pathaan or Vikram Rathore?
Sorry Ranveer, we have nothing against you but SRK is and will always be our Don
